Wiarton is the town everyone drives through on the way up the Bruce Peninsula, and that's exactly why it works as a base. You're twenty minutes from Sauble Beach, twenty-five from Lion's Head, and the last full-size grocery store before Tobermory is right on the main street. Stock up here. Your wallet will thank you when you see peninsula convenience-store prices.

The water is the part people don't expect. Wiarton sits at the head of Colpoys Bay, a sheltered arm of Georgian Bay, and the water here is that same impossible blue-green you drove north for. Bluewater Park runs right along the shoreline in town, with a beach, a marina, and enough room for kids to burn off a car ride. And yes, the famous groundhog lives here. The Wiarton Willie statue is a mandatory photo whether you think it's charming or ridiculous.

Waterfront cottages around Wiarton mostly sit along Mallory Beach Road on the east side of Colpoys Bay, where docks step straight into clear, deep water that suits swimmers and paddlers more than toddlers. If you'd rather have shallow, warm water and big sunsets, look ten minutes west to the Oliphant shore on the Lake Huron side, where the lake stays waist-deep seemingly forever. There's more to do here than the drive-through crowd realizes. Bruce's Caves Conservation Area is ten minutes east, a short walk to caves carved out by an ancient shoreline. And the Bruce Trail passes right through, so you can day-hike sections of the escarpment without driving to the national park.

Booking is friendlier here than in the beach towns. Wiarton doesn't get the July crush that Sauble Beach does, so you'll often find availability and better rates in peak weeks, with Lion's Head and the upper peninsula still an easy day trip away.

Insider tip: walk out to the lighthouse point at the end of Bluewater Park around sunset. The bay goes glass-calm most summer evenings, and you'll likely have the view mostly to yourself.
